MARKLAND, Kenneth Arthur
Kenneth Arthur Markland was born at Colchester, Essex on 30 July 1917 and baptised at Mile End, Colchester on 29 September 1917, son of Arthur Henry Markland (7 August 1880-June 1940), a male nurse, and his wife Amy Bellingham née Chapman (9 July 1889-1 March 1973), who married at Woolwich, London in 1915, and in 1939 were living on the Severalls Hospital Estate, Colchester. Kenneth married at Colchester in 1950, Phyllis Mary Markland née Doidge. In 1963 they moved to Beccles where Kenneth took an active interest in the National Association of Local Government Officers, twice being branch president and became associated with the town's branch of the Workers Educational Association, and St Michael's Parish Church, where he was a sidesman. One of the original members of the United Beccles movement, formed to promote independent candidates for the town council being elected in 1976 and was a councillor for well over 20 years serving as town Mayor in 1981. A member and exhibitor at the Beccles Society of Artists and served as its chairman for five years. Kenneth Arthur Markland died at Beccles, Suffolk on 16 December 2006.
