BURGOYNE, Ray
Raymond Burgoyne was born at Southend-on-Sea, Essex in 1945, son of Joseph William Burgoyne (1 October 1908-June 1992), a greengrocer, and his wife Doris Rose née Nash (1 December 1906-1979), who married at Rochford, Essex in 1932 and in 1939 were living at 58 Torquay Drive, Southend-on-Sea. Ray married in 1968 Sylvia Hurley and they had four children, Claire, Paul, Helen and Sam. Ray continued to work as a carpenter, at a boat-building yard in Leigh-on-Sea, doing shop fitting and antique restoration around Essex, and installing shows for the Design Centre in central London. Ray and Sylvia divorced in 1986 and later that year Ray married at Chelmsford, Essex, Gillian Patricia Fleming (February 1957-), a student nurse and they had two children. A self taught artist, painting generously in oils, the shapes tending to be geometric, but then a subtle almost whimsical piece will be delivered with a background in set creation in the theatre, and his work is typically minimal with strong and deep colours. In 1999 the family moved to Friston, Suffolk when Ray became a full-time artist. Often collaborating in exhibitions with other artists such as Colin Slee, Kate Giles and Emma Green, Ray falls back on his theatre production and planning skills with consummate ease. He has exhibited at the Ephemeral Gallery, High Street, Saxmundham, Suffolk and is the author of 'Thirteen Paintings' (2020). He lived at Blakes Cottage, Chases Lane, Friston, Saxmundham, Suffolk. Raymond Burgoyne died in May 2026.
