ALLAN, Vernon
Vernon Allan was born at Walworth, Surrey in 1861, son of James Benjamin Allan (1834-1913), a drawing master, and his wife Louisa née Lee (1935-1908), who married at Lambeth in 1859, James had continuing financial problems. In 1871, Vernon was a 3-year-old, living at Manor Villas, Mortlake, Surrey with his parents, 36-year-old James and 35-year-old Louisa and eight siblings, Lee 11, Melville 8, James 6, Louisa 5, Larpent 4, Ralph 3, Ada 1 and newly born Raymond. In 1881, Vernon was a 19-year-old artist, lodging at 23 Ockendon Road, Islington, London, the home of Annie Ramus and her family and he married at St Mary Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight on 2 November 1885, Sarah Elizabeth Smith (1856-30 April 1938), daughter of George Smith, and they moved to Bridge House, Bridge Street, Caversham, Surrey. In 1891, a 29-year-old landscape artist, still at Bridge House with his 32-year-old wife Sarah and their newly born daughter Vera, but shortly afterwards they moved to Lowestoft, Suffolk and, as Vernon Allen, noted in Kelly’s 'Directory of Suffolk' 1892 as an artist at 87 Albert Street, Lowestoft. By 1901, a 38-year-old professional artist at 2 Divinity Road, Cowley, Oxford with his 45-year-old wife and children, Vera 9, born at Caversham, Violet 8, born at Lowestoft and son Abury 6, born at Oxford (the ages are incorrectly written). In 1911, Sarah, married with four children, was still at Divinity Road, but her husband Vernon is absent. In 1921, Vernon, a dealer in pictures, was boarding at 12 Northcote Road, Isleworth, London, the home of the Philp family, another boarder was his son 21-year-old Cyril Allan, an out of work engineer who was born at Oxford. Vernon Allan died at Kingston-upon-Thames, London on 27 July 1945.
