SEDGWICK, Christine
As Christine Sykes, she was born at Thanet, Kent in 1928, daughter of Ernest Sykes (1 July 1891-23 April 1968), an Inland Revenue valuation clerk, and his wife Dora née Broadbent (1 June 1896-3 August 1991), who married at Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1927 and in 1939 were living at 144 West Way, Bournemouth. Christine studied at Regent Street Polytechnic and married at Bromley, Kent in 1951 fellow student, Jørgen Francis Sedgwick and they had two daughters, Anna who is also an artist and Deidre and they lived at Harold Road, Upper Norwood, London. Christine was teaching part-time in Adult Education in London but then worked as a full-time painter and printmaker. An artist exhibiting and working to commission, her art forms included visual art, printmaking in all types of paint including landscape, the sea flowing water and fantasy developed through drawings and photographs, often from observation, occasionally composite. She exhibited regularly in London and East Anglia including a series of monoprints and oil paintings about the movement and refraction of water, the subject being 'Bathers' and exhibited at Suffolk ACRE Art Exhibitions. Her studio was at Lytton Cottage, The Street, Holton St Peter, Halesworth, Suffolk before her move to Scotland. Christine Sedgwick died in Scotland on 12 April 2021.
