David Gillingwater

Christopher David Gillingwater was born in February 1966. He studied at Middlesex University 1984-1987, graduating B.A. (hons) in Graphic Design. An illustrator and graphic designer and a student of portrait artist Jack Stephenson, learning to produce portraits in oils, both formal and informal. Taking inspiration from the classical masters of the Edwardian era, David aspires to give narrative to the individuals depicted. A portrait and figure artist in oil, now living near Aldeburgh on the Suffolk Coast and is also a keen musician. In 1998, he formed his own company, Herring Bone Design Ltd., of 38 Church Road, Little Glemham, Suffolk, who are specialists in the design and illustration of promotional materials for retail, leisure, and publishing industries. David has been on the Aldeburgh lifeboat crew for over 20 years. His painting 'On Reflection' was painted as a narrative piece as part of Oilskins - A Portrait of the Aldeburgh Lifeboat Crew exhibition 2018 and has gained national recognition in the portrayal of lifeboat crew and he has exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists 2019 annual exhibition.
