Peter Gauld

Peter D. Gauld was born at Sunderland in 1945, son of Douglas H Gauld and his wife Pearl née Wilkinson (28 December 1916-2 April 2005), who married at Durham in 1944. Peter, having fallen in love with the art of letterpress printing, purchased a cast-iron Model No. 4 press, together with various founts of metal type and founded the 'Basement Press' in Ipswich in 1994. After spending some time abroad, in 2002 he restarted his press at Colchester, Essex as the New Basement Press also working as The Burrell Press and Green Lion Books, at the same time Peter continued to paint in acrylics or watercolour but mostly in oils. Peter was a Member of the Suffolk Art Society and exhibited from 29 Burrell Road, Ipswich in 1997, two items 'Stoke Street, Ipswich' and 'Dreams of Flying'. He illustrated Fred Sedgwick's 'Stone and Other Poems' (2004) and is the author of 'A Book of Emblems' (1998) and Wood-Engraving. A personal essay (2006) and many others. Peter is a local artist and print maker living and working in Old Orchard Close, Halesworth and a committee member at Halesworth Gallery.
