MARSHALL, Barry
Barry G. Marshall was born at 77 Medway Road, Ipswich in 1938, son of Jack Marshall (born 28 April 1908), a cabinet maker & joiner, and his wife Edith Caroline née Rand (30 March 1909-21 May 1999), who married at Ipswich in 1933 and in 1939 were living at 77 Medway Road, Ipswich with his sibling Sylvia Anne [Osborn] (born 22 March 1938). Barry studied at the Ipswich School of Art in the late 1950s and then began working as an antique furniture restorer with his father where his passion for wood carving developed. He married at Ipswich in 1967, Pamela Dorothy Marshall née Hooper. Barry became increasingly interested in sculpting and transforms unique pieces of found wood, that have been sea-washed or found by the river, weathered with character as a starting place for his wall sculptures. He combines the found wood as the base, on which he places handmade copper fish, either copper coloured or clear blue, to create wonderful wall sculptures and has held numerous successful solo exhibitions in East Anglia including Serena Hall Gallery, Southwold; Ipswich Town Hall Gallery and Graham & Oldham Gallery, Ipswich. A member of the Ipswich Art Club and he exhibited from 2 St Edmunds Road, Ipswich in 2006, three items a limestone & stainless steel 'Stilt'; a limestone 'The Embrace' and an oil 'Wendy'.
