EVES, Guy William
Guy William Eves was born at Ipswich in 1957, son of Owen Jack Eves (26 November 1921-1966), an engineer, and his wife Barbara Kate née Hewitt (1 July 1928-25 July 2007), who married at Ipswich in 1953. Guy converted an old garden shed into a studio before he studied at Ipswich School of Art in the 1970s, the era of local artists Colin Moss, Bernard Reynolds and Lawrence Self. Graduating in Fine Art & Design, he chose to pursue a career in design, initially working at the Oxford University Press for several years before joining an advertising consultancy, finally returning to Ipswich in 1987. He had married at Ipswich in 1978, Sally M. Jackson and in 1987 set up his own freelance design and illustration practice. In recent years Guy has been able to devote more of his time to his first love of botanical drawing, with his most recent work foregoing the use of colour entirely, preferring the clean, unobliterated lines that he can achieve using carefully selected grades of pencil and paper. His plant and flower subjects are not cut stems, but are living specimens, drawn in complete isolation from their natural habitat. By choosing to omit any signs of background, container or supporting structure, he ensures that the viewer’s eye is never detracted from the focus of attention–the subject. His attention to detail is such that the resulting imagery attains an almost photographic perfection. In November 2009, he was elected as a painting member of The Chelsea Physic Garden Florilegium Society and received a Highly Commended Award at the Society of Botanical Artists Open Show. Following this, two of his pieces were accepted into the 13th International Exhibition of Botanical Art & Illustration at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, USA, and Guy was elected a member of the Society of Botanical Artists. Guy is a tutor on the Society of Botanical Artists Distant Learning Diploma Course and is also a contributor to the book 'Botanical Painting with the Society of Botanical Artists' in the chapters on drawing techniques. A member of the Ipswich Art Society and lives at 38 Elmhurst Drive, Ipswich with his wife and family.
