Shawn Kholucy

Shawn Ralph Hamed Kholucy was born at Isleworth, London in April 1953, son of Ralph Hamed Kholucy (1926-19 December 1958) and his wife Pauline Gertrude née Chester (born October 1924), who later married Sydney Ribbons and lived at Needham Market, Suffolk. Shawn was educated at Everton House School and St Joseph's College, both in Ipswich and studied at the Birmingham School of Architecture, being awarded a Lethaby-Plunkett Scholarship by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and a Scholarship by the European Community to study architectural conservation at ICCROM (UNESCO's Conservation Institute in Rome). Shawn worked in the architectural design offices of Nicholas Grimshaw and Donald Insall and was formerly attached to the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem as its surveyor of Islamic monuments, engaged in research for the British Academy's book on 'Mamluke Jerusalem' published by Scorpion Pica in 1987. Since 1984 Shawn has been a sole-practitioner architect working on medieval churches for The Churches Conservation Trust, English Heritage, and individual parishes with occasional individual domestic and contemporary design work for private clients. His architectural work has received two craftsmanship awards from the Suffolk Architects' Association (1990 & 2006), general awards from the Ipswich Society (2001) and English Nature (1999), and The John Betjeman Memorial Award (2006). A trustee of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings 1987-1996 and 1998-2004 and for about ten years of both the Suffolk Preservation and the Bungay Castle Trusts and is currently a Guardian of the SPAB. He exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 'Ashleigh', Brockford, Stowmarket, Suffolk in 1979 'Concert Hall, Snape' and in 1992 exhibited three watercolours at the Enchanted Gardens Exhibition at the Richmond Gallery, Cork Street, London and has also exhibited at the annual art exhibitions in Eye Church, Suffolk and Diss Corn Hall, Norfolk and three works at the Art Workers Guild. Shawn also does commission work and in 2017 completed a commission for clients in Singapore.
