BEWLEY-POPE, Philippa

As Philippa M. Hetherington, she was born at Ipswich in 1948, daughter of Desmond Hugh Hetherington (25 February 1912-5 March 1997), an insurance agent, and his wife Gladys Jessie née Boston (10 June 1906-1988), who married at Ipswich in 1939. Philippa married firstly at Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1968, Jonathan Charles Cubitt (1938-18 October 2008) when she painted under the name of Philippa Cubitt. She studied at Ipswich School of Art under Colin Moss and at the Roehampton Institute with Hugo Grenville (5 August 1958-), enjoying his fauvist influences. Philippa is best known for her landscapes in watercolour and oils in the British landscape tradition and was a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 9 Quay Street, Woodbridge and exhibited in 1979, two pictures 'Cottage at Bredfield' and 'Mill Stream at Wickham Market' and in 1980, four further pictures 'River Deben', 'Trees across the River Deben', 'Bawdsey, Suffolk' and 'Wilford Bridge, Suffolk'. She married secondly at Woodbridge in 1981, Michael John Bewley-Pope (May 1936-), after which she exhibited as Philippa Bewley-Pope at the Royal West of England Academy and at the Hatfield Hines Gallery, Holt and elsewhere. She lived at Ufford, Woodbridge, Suffolk and her work has been widely exhibited throughout Suffolk and is also collected in New Zealand, America, and Spain.
