Peter Froste

Peter Anthony Froste was baptised at Little Shelford, Cambridge on 26 May 1935, son of Sidney Albert Edward Froste (25 September 1913-1976), a carpenter & joiner, and his wife Yvonne Florence née Browne (15 January 1913-2003), who married at Cambridge in 1934 and in 1939 were living at 1 Hall Villas, Great Bardfield, Braintree, Essex. After schooling at Great Bardfield, Peter studied at evening classes at Cambridge School of Art, then attended Chelsea School of Art and graduated in Fine Art Painting from Maidstone College of Art with a further post-graduate year at Leicester School of Art. After a career in commercial and archaeological illustration, retirement left him free to explore ideas initially formed at college, which are to do with maintaining the integrity of the picture surface and Peter produced illustrations for museums &c. some of which can been found on the Art UK website. A member of the Ipswich Art Club in 1977 and exhibited from 88 High Street, Wickham Market, Suffolk, an oil sketch 'Portrait of Jackie' and he later moved to Badingham, Suffolk before returning to his home county. A keen archaeologist and artist and much of his work can been seen in the Roman Circus Visitor Centre at Colchester, which includes a full-size modern circus mosaic which Peter designed, based loosely on the famous circus mosaic from Lyons in France. There is also the racing chariot cut-out in the garden and an oil painting depicting the Roman emperor Claudius taking the submission of some British kings at Colchester in AD 43. In 2018 the Colchester Archaeological Trust mounted an exhibition of his work ‘Reconstructing the Past‘. He married at Maidstone, Kent in 1967, Mary Mason and they had two sons. Peter Anthony Froste died on 16 December 2021.
