Michael Rees

Michael B. Rees was born at Watford, Hertfordshire on 9 August 1962, son of Derek Rees and his wife Anne E. née Doman, who married at Colchester, Essex in 1959. Educated at St Matthews Church of England School in Ipswich, Rees had been accepted by Ipswich School of Art in 1979, having grown up in the town and, casting his mind back to his early years, he recalls being “lazy and disruptive” at school, and little better at art college and, dropping out of Ipswich School of Art was accompanied by a clear, if paradoxical, decision 'to make a life as a professional artist'. Michael married at Ipswich in 1986, artist Tracy Rees née Sheldrick and Michael and Tracy moved to Cornwall in 1987. Michael is essentially self-taught artist in mixed media and a printmaker and first exhibited in Cornwall at the Salthouse Gallery, Norway Square, Saint Ives, Cornwall in 1988. He has since exhibited at Desmond Fine Art, London; Market House Gallery, Marazion; Badcocks Gallery, The Strand, Newlyn; Oliver Contemporary, London; Goldfish Contemporary Fine Art, Penzance; Market House Gallery, Cornwall and elsewhere and has had mixed exhibitions at several galleries. He has also published several books including 'Paintings, Sculpture and Prints' (1997). He and his wife lived at Ludgvan, Penzance, Cornwall.
