HURRY, Wilfred

1878 - 1954

Wilfred Hurry was born at Bramford, near Ipswich on 6 August 1878, son of Thomas William Hurry (1842-5 October 1914), a paper maker, and his wife Mary Ann née Tozer (1845-1925), who married at Holy Trinity, Halstead, Essex on 20 October 1866. Wilfred studied at the Ipswich School of Art from 1898 passing the City and Guilds of London Art School awards and the Royal Society of Arts 1904-1907. Wilfred married at Bramford in 1906, Helen May Baker (28 May 1879-30 October 1960) and in 1911, a 32-year-old paper maker, living at Holly Cottage, Sproughton Road, Bramford with his 31-year-old wife Helen May, who was born at Thornham, Suffolk with their two children Muriel 2 and Wilfred Roy (1910-2005). Wilfred exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from Holly Cottage in 1934, three pictures including 'Cromer Cliffs' and 'Old Cottages, Bramford' and in 1937 two works 'Chapel Farm, Earl Stonham' and 'Interior, Barham School House'. In 1939, an elementary school teacher, still living at Holly Cottage, with his wife Helen. Wilfred Hurry died at Holly Cottage Bramford on 2 August 1954, aged 75. A Miss Hurry was an honorary member of the Ipswich Art Club 1938-1956, but did not exhibit, who was his daughter Muriel Hurry, who was born at Bramford on 22 April 1908 and died at 'Lucidor Duckamere', Bramford on 29 September 1988.
