COUSIN, Mary
As Mary Downes, she was born in the Lewisham district of London in 1934, daughter of William Downes, and his wife Ida Annie Bailey, who married at Camberwell, London in 1922. Mary married in the Sheffield district in 1963, Frank Cousin and paints under the name of Mary Cousin. At the age of nearly 60, Mary enrolled with Open College of the Arts and painted mostly in acrylics on a wide variety of subjects, frequently taking inspiration from the landscape near her home at The Willows, Manse Lane, Cratfield, Suffolk. A former member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from Cratfield in 2006, two acrylic paintings 'The Road to Huntingfield' and 'Reflections'. She later took up printmaking and her small, coloured lino prints often depicted animals and birds. She was also a member of the Southwold Art Circle and of the Suffolk Open Studios. Mary, like her husband, was a contributor to the 'Westhall Secret Postcard Auction' in 2012 'Running Hare' which realised £40, and the following year exhibited an acrylic 'Acrobatic Cat' she also contributed to the 'Laxfield Secret Postcard Auction'. Mary Cousin died on 26 May 2022.
