TOLFREE, Barry Reay
Barry Reay Tolfree was born on the Isle of Man in November 1941, son of William Reay Twyford Tolfree (12 July 1910-26 August 2006), a bank clerk, and his wife Olive Ann Swain née Kerruish (21 October 1909-16 October 1991), who married at Bucklow, Cheshire in 1940 and in 1952 were living in Douglas, IoM. Barry was educated at Douglas High School for Boys and studied English literature at the University of Durham. He married at Croydon, Surrey in 1968, Vivien M. Hughes and they lived at 17 Wolverton Avenue, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey. After having spent three decades as a writer in advertising, PR and technical journalism, Barry commenced painting in 1991 painting in both in watercolour and oil and his work includes portraits and places, especially buildings which exhibit the effects of successive layers of history with evidence of alternating periods of human attention and neglect. He lives in Southwold and is a member of the Southwold Art Circle.
