CROUGHTON, George Hanmer

1843 - 1920

George Hanmer Croughton was born at Westminster, London on 17 April 1843 and baptised at St Thomas’s, Finsbury Square on 9 April 1852, son of Thomas Hanmer Croughton and his wife Ann née Swinyard, who married at St Luke’s, London on 31 May 1840. Croughton studied at the Royal College of Art at South Kensington under Thomas Sydney Cooper (1803-1902), and at Antwerp and in Paris. George married at Bath in September 1865, Charlotte Morgan (born 1844) of Bath. He painted for the Royal Family and for nobility and exhibited at the International Expo in London in 1874 winning a first-class medal for enlargements and at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society exhibition from his Regent Street, London address in 1872 and 1874, winning a medal for miniatures on ivory at each. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1874, a watercolour of flowers. In 1876 George, his wife and children moved from London to 19 London Road South, Lowestoft and where in 1881, George was a 38-year-old miniature painter & photographer with his 38-year-old wife and their children, Lottie 14, Bessie Jane 13, Annie 12, Mary Georgina 10, George Frederick 9 and Amy 1 and in 1881 he published an article in the 'British Journal of Photography'. He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 19 London Road South, Lowestoft in 1881 five oils, ‘On a Lee Shore’, 'A Suffolk Lane', 'Near Reedham', 'On Fritton Decoy' and 'After the Gale', five paintings in 1882, 'In the Corner of the Hayfield', 'The Trysting Tree', 'In the Gloaming', 'A Woodland Stream' and 'Old Bob', and three in 1883 'A Quiet Nook, Fritton Decoy', 'On the Holm Sands 1882' and 'A Rustic Toilet'. He left Lowestoft in 1886 for New York, USA and was Secretary of Rochester Art Club, New York 1892, president 1895 and treasurer 1902 and a member and president of the Rochester Camera Club. George Hanmer Croughton died at his home in Rochester, New York on 15 April 1920.
