GENTRY, Edward [Ted]

Edward Henry Gentry was born at 20 Kerrison Road, Battersea, London in 1943, son of John Edward Henry Gentry (24 September 1913-12 July 1991), a maintenance fitter, and his wife Violet Doris née Chidley (13 October 1912-20 November 1981), who married at Woolwich, London in 1936. Ted, as he was known, was educated at Woolverstone Hall, near Ipswich which overlooks the River Orwell which was a prime influence in his output as an artist. Ted studied physical education and art at Carnegie College, Leeds and later completed an Art History degree. He returned to Suffolk to teach at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook near Ipswich, and in 1978 appointed Head of Art at St Joseph's College, Ipswich from where he retired. His work shows influences of the 19th and 20th century masters, in the use of colour, tone and texture and Ted has exhibited widely in East Anglia and on the continent. A member of the Ipswich Art Club and a regular exhibitor from 2 Greenbank, Church Hill, Holbrook, Ipswich, including two pictures in 1980, 'The Orwell' and 'Low Tide, L'Ancresse, Guernsey', three in 1990 'Small Boats', 'Poppies, near Dodnash' and 'Apple Trees, Dodnash', one in 1997 'Dunwich Beach' but in 2006 exhibited from Little Oaks, Bentley, Ipswich, three paintings, two acrylics 'Shopping' and 'King Street, Ipswich' and a mixed media 'Harmony 5'.
