SNOOK, Reg
Reginald Francis Snook was born at Ipswich in 1938, son of Arthur William Francis Snook (5 October 1892-1970), who worked for the local gas company, and his wife Evelyn Victoria M. née Gilson (23 February 1897-1967), who married at Ipswich in 1916, and in 1939 were living at 115 Lindberg Road, Ipswich. Reg was educated at Northgate grammar school, Ipswich and apprenticed to a commercial art firm for five years. He then spent three years in the army, serving in Cameroon and Nigeria where he drew various birds which had been captured by his colleagues. On his return to civilian life, he re-joined his old firm for two more years before starting his own business, running a studio, and exhibiting alongside artists such as Leonard Squirrell and Raymond Watson. He married at Ipswich in 1961, Ann Moss, and they had two children. Reg was at one time the East Suffolk representative for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and in 1972 a founder member of the Suffolk Ornithologists’ Group and has worked as a wildlife inspector for the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, specialising in birds of prey. A member at the Ipswich Art Club from 1965 and lived at Chelmondiston before returning to Ipswich, exhibiting at the Ipswich Art Club from 5 Manor Road, Ipswich in 1990, 'Poppy Field' and in 1997 'Orwell Bridge Allotments'. Reg had a notable change of direction in 2001 when he turned his talents to portraiture and, with the backing of The Lord Cranworth, painted portraits of the workforce of the Cranworth Estate. At his studio in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, Reg has produced more than 200 portraits of the villagers over the past several years. He has published two books 'Portrait of a Park: A year with the wildlife of Christchurch Park' (2011) and 'Portrait of an Owl: My tales of Mabel and other owls' (2012).
