CLAYDEN, Emily Ann
Emily Ann Clayden was born at Hadleigh, Suffolk in 1846 and baptised on 18 September 1846, daughter of Henry Clayden (c1914-29 December 1860), auctioneer and ironmonger, and his first wife Ellen née Durham (1822-1848) who married in 1843. Emily studied at the Ipswich School of Science & Art and in 1884 passed her certificate in linear perspective. A landscape painter in oils and watercolours, her subjects included local landscapes, Devon, Scottish and Dutch views, and flower studies. Emily was a member of Ipswich Art Club 1878-1925 and exhibited, when she was living with her aunt, 75 year old Mary Rand, at 25 Park Terrace, Fonnereau Road, Ipswich in 1881, oils, ‘Friends’ and ‘In the Trossacks’, in 1883 an oil 'On Lynmouth Beach' and two watercolours 'Bird's Nest' and 'Sea Study' and was still showing from Ipswich in 1910 ‘Ber Street [Norwich]', in all exhibiting some 66 works. She also exhibited from Fonnereau Road, Ipswich at the Woodbridge Industrial and Art Exhibition in 1887, an oil painting 'Spring Flowers' and a watercolour 'Alderton Church' when she was also known as Miss Claydon of Ipswich. In 1891, still living at 25 Fonnereau Road ‘on own means’ with a single servant. In 1911, was at a boarding house at 12 Durley Road, Roseneath, Bournemouth but by 1921 was back living at 25 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich. Emily Ann Clayden died at Ipswich on 6 February 1926, aged 80, she was unmarried.
