BURWOOD, Dora
Dora Burwood was born at Manningtree, Essex on 8 October 1866, third daughter of Thomas Wesley Burwood (1838-8 November 1922), of the Wesleyan School, Manningtree, and his first wife Mary Jessup (1843-1871, only daughter of John Jessup, a timber merchant at Manningtree, who married at St Botolph's, Aldgate, London on 4 August 1862, he married secondly at Hull in 1880, Maria Jane Dryden. In 1871, Dora was a 4-year-old living at Strathmore, Florence Road, Ealing, Essex with her parents, 32-year-old Thomas, now a homeopathic physician, who was born at Walsham le Willows, Suffolk, and 27-year-old Mary with siblings Mary E. 7 and Laura 6, both born at Manningtree, and in 1891 Thomas and his new wife and the family were still living at Ealing. Dora studied at Bedford Park Art School. A member and exhibitor at Ipswich Fine Art Club 1895-1897 and exhibited from Ealing in 1895, six oil paintings 'How the Sweet Moonlight Sleeps upon this Bank', 'Fishing of the Anglesey Coast', 'Evening Mists', 'A Stormy Evening on a Norfolk Common', 'Twilight', 'Sunset across the Common', 'A Bend in the River' and a watercolour 'A Country Lane at Ealing' and in 1896, two oils 'Roses' and 'Across the Moor' and two watercolours 'Still Waters' and 'A Grey Day', she also exhibited seven paintings in February 1897 and nine in November 1897. She married at St Mary's Church, Ealing on 1 January 1898, Arthur Edward Ironmonger-Sola (1869-12 August 1912), a partner in Wills, Sola & Co, builders, decorators & house agents, who went bankrupt in 1906, when their address was given as 122 The Grove, Ealing. Her husband died at Farnham, Surrey in 1912, aged 43, and the following year Dora married at Bromley, Kent, John M. Frost. In 1939, Dora Frost was a widow, living at Pentre Garth, Pontfadog, Nr Llangollen, Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales with a chauffeuse and two indoor servants, and where she died on 4 October 1949, aged 82.
