BARRAUD, Francis Philip

1824 - 1900

Francis Philip Barraud was born at Camberwell, London on 19 July 1824, son of William Francis Barraud (born 1783) and his wife Sophia née Hull (1782-1827), who married at St Giles, London on 11 March 1809. One of several of a family artist which include brother Charles Decimus Barraud (1822-1897), others were Allan Barraud (1849-1913) and Charles James Barraud (1843-1894). Francis visited New Zealand on the 'Northfleet' in 1842 and some of his watercolours were exhibited with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts 1889-1897. He married at Croydon, Surrey on 21 August 1858, Mary Elizabeth Towers who died in 1864, and they had issue and he married secondly at St Saviour's Church, Croydon on 19 September 1868, Mary Ann Peck, daughter of J. Peck of London. Francis worked mostly in watercolour and in stained glass and was a partner of Lavers & Barraud, stained glass artists. In 1871, a 46-year-old 'artist in glass' living at Addiscombe Road, Croydon with his 26-year-old wife and four children, Mary Mabel 10, Mary Elizabeth 6, Helen Margaret 1 and newly born Arthur Cameron, retaining four indoor servants. He produced a series of views of colleges, and another of cathedrals and was a member of Ipswich Fine Art Club 1885-1890 when of 17 Sisters' Avenue, Lavender Hill, London exhibiting in 1885 three watercolours 'Norwich Cathedral', 'Amiens Cathedral' and 'Church of St Pierre Louvain, Belgium' and he also exhibited at the Royal Academy. Francis Philip Barraud died at 34 Sisters' Avenue, Lavender Hill, London on 29 January 1900, aged 75, leaving a widow.
