WALTON, John

1915 - 1987

John Walton was born at Mellis, near Eye, Suffolk on 2 June 1915, son of Stanley Walton (1892-1914/18) and his wife Ethel Belinda née Porcher-Meen (7 August 1891-1971), who married at Mellis in 1913. John studied at Ipswich School of Art and Goldsmiths College. In 1939, a sales representative, living at Sunnyside, Mellis with his mother Ethel and sister Dorothy (born 27 March 1912). He married in the Surrey S.E. district in 1941, Irene Patricia Spencer and they had a son and four daughters. John Walton held various teaching positions until finally becoming art director of Oakham School, Rutland living at Edith Weston, Rutland. Artist, illuminator and calligrapher, one of his illuminated scrolls was presented to HM the Queen in 1967. John Walton died in 1987.
