Arthur Graham & Daphne Reynolds

As Daphne Dent, she was born at Huddersfield, Yorkshire on 12 January 1918, daughter of Thomas Dent (14 November 1868-22 December 1945), a photographer, and his wife Florence Nightingale née Haskett (29 October 1880-14 June 1953), who married at Ormskirk in 1914. Daphne was educated at Wentworth School, Huddersfield and studied at Huddersfield College of Arts 1934-1936. Her father's portrait photography business was in poor financial straits when Daphne joined him, when she became a member of the Professional Photographer's Association. In 1939 she was an ARP Report Centre, living with her parents at Burlington House, Trinity Street, Huddersfield and in 1941 she moved with the Civil Defence to London. Daphne married in London in 1943, Arthur Graham Reynolds, future keeper of prints & drawings at the Victoria & Albert Museum and she painted under the name of Daphne Reynolds. Daphne commenced exhibiting in mixed shows in the 1950s and during the next decade Anthony Gross (1905-1984) taught her printing at the Slade School of Fine Art and her many mixed shows included Arts Council's New Painting 1958-1961; Colnaghi 1974; 80 Prints by Modern Masters at Flowers Gallery 1982 and the New English Art Club 1992. When her husband, known as Graham Reynolds, retired from the V & A in 1974 they moved to Suffolk and Daphne was included in an exhibition 'A Survey of Influential East Anglian Artists' at the Chappel Galleries, Essex in 1991, who gave her a solo show in 1996, the first of many solo shows at this venue. A founder member of Gainsborough's House Print Workshop, Sudbury and its first chairman 1978-1979 and a fellow of the Printmakers Council. The Arts Council, Victoria & Albert Museum, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and Auckland City Art Gallery in New Zealand hold her pictures. Daphne Reynolds died at her home The Old Manse, Bradfield St George, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk on 12 December 2002.
