PRETTY, John Robert
John Robert Pretty was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk on 2 October 1932, son of Thomas John Pretty (20 April 1906-2 January 1977), a painter & paperhanger, and his wife Elsie Henrietta née Saunders (25 December 1905-16 May 1995), who married at Lowestoft in 1930 and in 1939 were living at 92 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft. John's younger days were spent in the nearby town of Southwold, and he was educated at Sir John Leman Grammar School at Beccles, Suffolk before training as an arts and crafts teacher at Loughborough College of Art and Design. He married at Epping, Essex in 1956, Elizabeth Susan Olley (18 December 1933-) and and they lived at 54 Pier Avenue, Southwold. From 1958, John spent seven years as principal of a technical craft school in Nigeria where they had two sons Julian Nicholas (born 1958) and Christopher John (born 1960), who married Dawn Pretty. Around 1965 they returned to Suffolk, living at 1 Barkis Meadow, Blundeston, from where he was head of an art and craft department, retiring in 1980 as a high-school tutor. An artist who exhibited at the Haste Gallery, Ipswich who gave him his first solo exhibition in 1994. He lived at 10 Nightingale Avenue, Reydon, Southwold with his wife Elizabeth.
