David Laing

David Stuart Laing was born at Felixstowe, Suffolk in August 1954, son of Alan Stuart Laing (7 June 1923-3 November 1976) and his wife Audrey Lilian née Sparrow (1923-28 January 2015), who married in the Deben district of Suffolk in 1946. David studied medical biology and worked for the Medical Research Council before making extensive travels. On returning to England, he studied at Hornsey College of Art 1980-1983, École Des Beaux Arts, Paris 1986 and the Royal College of Art 1985-1987 for a master's degree in fine art and settled in London. He married at Ipswich in 1992, Harriet Green (1959-) founder of the Harriet Green Gallery. Laing founded The Block Studios for Printmaking in London and taught fine art and printmaking for many years. He has exhibited at the British Council, Ljubljana Biennale, Yugoslavia 1991; Whitechapel Art Gallery 1992; Artists' Books, South Bank Centre 1993 and Lannon Gallery, New York 1995 and elsewhere. He has had solo exhibitions at the Harriet Green Gallery 1995 where he showed dark paintings scattered with forms that reflected his biological background. Later shows included The Large Print Show, Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich in 1997. David and his wife currently [2022] manage an art service, Pure & Applied Conservation Framing, in Bermondsey Street, London.
