ATKINSON, Charles Gerard

1879 - 1955

Charles Gerard Atkinson was born at Seaforth, Lancashire on 28 April 1879, son of John Frederick Henry Atkinson (1841-1909), a solicitor, and his wife Louisa Elizabeth née Mignot (1844-1916), who was born at Montevideo and married at St George's Hanover Square, London in 1878. In 1881, the family were living at 'West View', Crosby Road South, Litherland, Lancashire. Charles was educated privately and at Cambridge and at the age of 17 was an apprentice architect living with the family at 'West View' and studied art in the studio of Walter Hilton (1845–1913) at Liverpool before studying abroad. Charles exhibited at Liverpool also at the Royal Society of British Artists and was a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He married at Williton, Somerset in 1933, Mary Ann Gray (25 June 1900-1990) and in 1939 an artist living at Lake View, The Lakes, Grasmere, Westmorland with his wife Mary Ann. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1946-1956 and exhibited from Grasmere, Cumbria in 1945 a watercolour 'Lake Windermere-Iron Kelp and Wetherlam' and in 1946 another watercolour 'Lake Windermere-A Glorious Day' but does not seem to have exhibited again. Charles Gerard Atkinson died on a trip to Westmorland in 1955, aged 76.
