Rupert William Frederick Charles Cracknell was born at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk in 1937, youngest son of Harold Charles Cracknell (18 September 1888-2 June 1954) and his second wife Rosalie Gustavie née Brock (31 January 1904-5 August 1969), who married at Bury St Edmund's Catholic Church on 22 April 1935, Harold's first wife was Florence Annie Caston (1887-1931). Rupert was educated at the Silver Jubilee Boys' School in Bury St Edmund's and spent two years at the Ipswich School of Art and in 1955, when living at 39a St John's Street, Bury St Edmund's, won a two-year Andrew Grant scholarship to the Edinburgh College of Art where, in 1957 awarded a Diploma of Art (drawing and painting) and a post-graduate scholarship. He first exhibited at the Young Contemporary Artists exhibition at the Royal Society of British Artists Galleries in London in 1957 and was a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle in 1960 from Bury St Edmund's. In 1971 a group leader in Art Therapy, living at Kensington Court, London before moving to Wales. He married at Darlington in 1977, Roberta [Bonnie] Stanley.
