Edith Marion Hocquard nee Scales

Edith Marion Scales was born at Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire on 23 May 1892, second child of Richard Scales (18 April 1865-9 April 1952), a corset manufacturer, and his wife Susannah née Buckenham (21 July 1865-10 January 1940), who married at St Michael's Church, Beccles, Suffolk on 17 April 1889 and in 1939 were living at 62 London Road, Newark. In 1911, Edith was a 19-year-old art student, living at 62 London Road, Newark, with her parents, 46-year-old Richard and 47-year-old Susannah, with siblings Edward Lionel 20, Herbert 15 and Elizabeth Cynthia Scales. Edith was educated at Lincoln High School and studied at Nottingham School of Art under Herbert Wilson Foster (1846-1929). She married at Hampstead, London in 1927, Emile Gilbert Hocquard (23 April 1898-29 September 1983) but continued to work under her maiden name of E. M. Scales. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1953-1967 and in 1953 exhibited from Copingers, Lavenham, oil paintings 'Old Devonshire House' and 'Yellow and Red', in 1954 'Discarded', 'Flatford' and 'The Dream', in 1955 'The Queen's Almsman' and 'Janet', with her last showing in 1967 'Old Rose Garden, Overstrand, Cromer' and 'Everything in the Orchard'. She was also a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1954-1962, from Little Orchard, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, and she also exhibited at the Royal Academy; the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; Royal Institute of Oil Painters; the Paris Salon and elsewhere from 62 Glebe Place, London. Edith Marion Hocquard lived at Monks Eleigh, Suffolk before moving to Norfolk and died at Old Rose Garden, Harbord Road, Overstrand, Cromer, Norfolk on 28 October 1967, aged 75, and was buried in St Martin's Churchyard, Overstrand, her only son, Paul Ewen Hocquard was born at Hampstead on 21 April 1929 and died at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk on 28 October 1999. Her head & shoulders self-portrait was a medal winner at the Paris Salon. She signed her works 'E. M. Scales' in block letters.
