AUSTIN, Vincent

1929 - 2021

Vincent Austin was born at Wellingborough, Northamptonshire in 1929. He was educated at Wellingborough Grammar School and studied at Wellingborough Technical College, and despite early ambitions to become an artist, initially worked in farming and engineering. During his National Service he developed his skills in vehicle engineering and metal work, later finding time to train as a registered silversmith. Vincent became a lecturer in agricultural engineering at Silsoe College in the 1950s, where he designed, and patented, agricultural equipment. This led to opportunities abroad and he worked in Peru, Panama, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Greece, Papua New Guinea and Mexico. He married at Wellingborough in 1955 Joan M Bailey (1929-) and they lived at the Old Vicarage, Flitton, Bedfordshire before moving to Southwold. On his retirement he took up painting seriously, and was a member of Southwold Art Circle and a prizewinner in 2017. Vincent Austin died on 11 May 2021.
