SOMERVILLE, Stuart Scott

1908 - 1983

Stuart Scott Somerville was born at Arksey, Doncaster, Yorkshire on 6 February 1908, one of the several children of Scottish born Charles Somerville (July 1870-1939), and his second wife Rose Ann née Chantree (18 November 1879-1971), who married at St Michael's, Chester Square, London in 1905. In 1921 the family were living at the Old Ford Farm, Bridge Road, Ashford, 50-year-old Charles, a poultry farmer, and 41-year-old Rose Ann with children Nancy 25, William 16, Charles Forbes 14, Stuart Scott 13, Gordon 12, Kenneth 9, Rosemary Victoria 6 and Margaret Scott Peggy Somerville 3. Stuart was educated at home and studied under his father and his fascination with the female nude began at the age of 15 and during the last two decades of his life he worked assiduously on the female form, but he almost never exhibited these works. A painter of floral paintings in the Old Master manner, landscapes, figures and interiors and he first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1925 and his last exhibit was in 1961. He also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; Royal Hibernian Academy; Royal Scottish Academy and the Fine Art Society and elsewhere. In 1939, he was living at Talland Porthallow, Liskeard, Cornwall and he married at Sclerder Abbey, Looe, Cornwall on 8 August 1942, Kathleen, known as Catherine, Mary Lavine, daughter of William Lavine of Ponterfract, and they had two sons and five daughters. A member of Ipswich Art Club 1946-1966, exhibiting from his then home at Newbourne Hall, near Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1974, an oil 'Flower Piece'. Stuart Scott Somerville was of Newbourne Hall, near Ipswich when he died of cancer on 20 June 1983. He signed his works 'Stuart Scott Somerville' joined and underlined or 'S. S. S.'.
