CROWLEY, Graham

1950 - ?

Graham N Crowley was born at Romford, Essex in 1950, son of Victor M. Crowley and his wife Violet M. Lee, who married at Ilford, Essex in 1945. Graham was educated at Rayleigh Sweyne School in Essex 1961-1968 and studied at St Martin's School of Art in London 1968-1972, his tutors included husband and wife Henry Mundy (1919-2019) and Gillian Ayres (1930-2018) graduating in 1972, proceeding to the Royal College of Art 1972-1975 graduating with a master's degree in 1975. After teaching at several academies, he returned to professional painting with a studio in Gray's Inn Road, London and was a prize winner at the Tolly Cobbold Eastern Arts in 1983 exhibiting widely elsewhere with his first solo show at Edward Totah Gallery, London in 1984 followed by the Albert Totah Gallery in New York. He was senior fellow in painting at South Glamorgan Institute, Cardiff 1986-1989, and the family moved to Staunton, Gloucestershire. After other residencies in 1992 he returned to live in London and was tutor in painting at Kingston University 1993-1994 and was professor of painting at the Royal College of Art 1996-2006 but retired from teaching in 2006 and moved to his holiday home in West Cork, Ireland. After a further three years in London, in 2014 he came to live in Suffolk. He exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy. Graham Crowley married at Fulham, London in 1978 Sally A. Townsend and they had two children.
