RAY, Eva Lindley

1861 - 1941

Eva Lindley Ray, was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk on 21 January and baptised at St John's Lowestoft on 24 May 1861, eldest of the four children of Dr James Ray (1831-4 July 1903), M.R.C.S. and his wife Hannah Catherine (Kate) née Nicholson (1831-25 July 1864), who married at Mansfield, Nottingham in 1860, Eva was a sister to Emily Ray [q.v.]. In 1881, a 20 year old, living at 55 High Street, Lowestoft with her 50 year old widowed father, his 52 year old wife's sister Emily Lindley, and siblings James Frederick (1862-1936) and Emily Caroline Phyllis 17 [q.v.]. She exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club from 55 High Street, Lowestoft in 1883, lot 641 'Rhododendron'. She married at St George's Hanover Square, London on 26 August 1887, 29 year old Dr Allan Heslop Jackson (12 October 1858-15 July 1912), a general practitioner, and in 1891 they were living at High Street, Lowestoft with three children, Lancelot 2, Hamilton 1 and newly born Gladys, all born in Lowestoft. In 1911 Eva was head of the family and a 50 year old employer at a laundry, living at 41 Blyburgate, Beccles, Suffolk with two of her five children, 20 year old Alice, born Lowestoft and 15 year old Allan Ray, born Oulton, Suffolk, with her 83 year old aunt Emily Lindley, a spinster, and retained two indoor servants. Her husband, who was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica on 12 August 1858 had died at Brandon, Manitoba, Canada on 15 July 1912 and their son, 2nd Lt Hamilton Ray Jackson was killed in action in Belgium on 26 July 1917, aged 27. In 1939, Eva was still of Thatched House, 41 Blyburgate, Beccles, Suffolk when she died at 131 Newmarket Road, Norwich on 16 July 1941, aged 80.
