RAY, Emily Caroline Phyllis

1863 - 1911

Emily Caroline Phyllis Ray was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk and baptised at St Margaret's Church, Lowestoft on 7 June 1863, younger daughter of Dr James Ray (1831-4 July 1903), M.R.C.S. and his wife Hannah Catherine (Kate) Nicholson (1831-25 July 1864), widow of Captain Nicholson, fifth daughter of Charles Lindley of Westfield House, who married at St John's Church, Mansfield, Nottingham on 18 April 1860, Emily was a sister to Eva Lindley Ray. In 1871, Emily was a 7-year-old, living at 55 High Street, Lowestoft with her 40-year-old widowed father James and her three siblings, Eva Lindley 10, James Frederick 9 and John Lindley (1864-1905). She and her sister Eva are listed as exhibitors at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 55 High Street, Lowestoft in 1881 but Emily does not seem to have displayed any work. Emily married at St Margaret's Church, Lowestoft on 30 July 1891, Charles Blackwell Foster (1861-2 December 1915), a solicitor, of Mill Hill Road, Norwich. In 1911, Emily was a 47-year-old, living at Station Road, Drayton, Norfolk with her 49-year-old husband and two daughters Norah Frances Phyllis 17 and Beryl Ray 15, both students, she had two other children that had died. Emily Caroline Phyllis Foster died at Drayton, Norfolk on 22 June 1911.
