Alfred Alexander Clarke was born at Langford Budville, Somerset on 24 April 1825, one of the thirteen children of William Clarke and his wife Jane. He married at St Mary's Church, Taunton, Somerset on 28 September 1851, Elizabeth Margaret Hawkins of Dublin, and had issue but was a widower by 1861, when a 35-year-old artist, living at 13 Close Hall, The Liberty of St Andrew, Wells, Somerset with his only child, 8-year-old Mary M., born at Taunton. A member of the Somerset Archaeological Society and many of his pictures were of local architecture and antiquities. He spent most of his life at Wells, Somerset and there is no record of him in Suffolk, but he exhibited at the Bury & West Suffolk Fine Art Society in 1889, a portrait of the 'Bishop of Bath & Wells'. Alfred Alexander Clarke died at 13 Vicar's Close, Wells on 13 March 1913, aged 88. Most probably not a Suffolk artist.
