1809 - 1868

Thomas Mogford was born at Exeter, Devon on 1 May 1809, son of William Mogford, a veterinary surgeon at Northlew, Devonshire, and his wife Elizabeth née Thorne, who married at Williton, Somerset on 4 July 1804. Thomas showed an early talent for drawing, as well as mechanics and chemistry, but eventually decided on painting in preference to engineering. He studied at Exeter under John Gendall (c.17901865) and for some years was articled to him and to a Mr. Cole. At the end of his apprenticeship, he married at St Leonard Exeter on 1 May 1833, Cole's eldest daughter Ann, and settled in Northernhay Place, Exeter. He sent three pictures to the Royal Academy in 1838, and three in 1839. About 1843 he moved to London, and subsequently exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy of Edward Hodges Baily, R.A., which is now in their possession, Samuel Cousins, the engraver, Professor J. O. Adams, the astronomer, Colonel Napier, the historian, and others. He also painted and exhibited 'The Sacrifice of Noah' and 'The Loves of the Angels' at the Royal Academy in 1846. Mogford exhibited at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 'The Sacrifice of Noah' which he had exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1844. By 1861 he had moved to Guernsey where he founded a school of painting and practised entirely as a landscape painter, occasionally revisiting England and Exeter to paint portraits. For some years he was crippled by palsy through the effects of lead poisoning but continued to paint up to the day of his death. Thomas Mogford died at his home at The Elms, St Martin, Guernsey on 13 September 1868. His death is announced in the 'Illustrated London News' of 3 October 1868 '13th ultimo'.
