EYRE, John
John Eyre was born at St Pancras, London on 1 December 1847 and baptised at St Thomas, Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire on 11 September 1850, twin son with George, of George Eyre (1818-1887), a decorative artist in the Potteries, and his wife Betsey née Stone (1823-1892), who married at Stoke Newington, London in 1847. In 1851, John was a 3-year-old living at Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent, with his parents, 33-year-old George, a pottery designer, and 27-year-old Betsey, with siblings George 3, born at St Pancras, and twins Edwin and Eliza Sarah 1, both born in Penkhull with all four baptised at the same time. John studied at the Royal College of Art, South Kensington, and devoted himself chiefly to the design and decoration of pottery, first for the firm of Minton, and later as art director to Doulton of Lambeth. John married at Kensington, London in 1874, Susanna Vargas, a fellow student at South Kensington, and in 1891, a 43-year-old fine art painter, living at Bridge Road, West Battersea, London with his 42-year-old wife Susanna, and their three children Amy Louisa 12, John Vargas 10 and Dora Elizabeth 8. A genre painter and book illustrator, who turned to painting and in 1877 exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy, subsequently becoming a frequent exhibitor at Burlington House until 1919 and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and in 1917 elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and in his later years an Honorary Associate of the Royal College of Art. George also exhibited at Paris Salon and at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1923, a watercolour 'Sheep Shearing'. John Eyre lived at Cranleigh in Surrey where he died on 13 September 1927. His daughter Amy was also an artist painter and designed jewellery.
