FRERE-SMITH, Sylvia Adrienne

1891 - 1974

As Sylvia Adrienne Naftel, she was born at Seacombe, Cheshire on 25 September 1891, daughter of Percy Hartley Naftel (1860-1941), an electrical engineer, and his first wife Sarah Louisa née Williams (1862-1894), who married at Liverpool in 1889, Percy married secondly at Birkenhead in 1899, Clara Margaret née Jones. In 1911, a 19 year old, living at The Homestead, Mere Lane, Wallasey, Cheshire, with her father, 51 year old Percy and 36 year old step-mother Clara, with a siblings Paul 20, and two step-siblings George Oakley 6 and Beryl 5, all born in Cheshire. She married at Birkenhead, Cheshire in 1919, Percival Frere-Smith (8 September 1877-21 January 1960), son of Charles Thomas Smith and Julia Emily Greathead. In 1939, they were living at Sutton Valence, Sutton Place, Hollingbourne, Kent where her husband Percival, who was born on 8 September 1877, died in 1960, aged 82 and Adrienne, who was known as Sylvia, died at Loose Nursing Home, Loose, Maidstone, Kent on 22 January 1974. They had four children Geoffrey Naftel Frere-Smith (12 June 1920-Sep 2003); Matthew Frere-Smith (16 May 1923-29 December 1999); Rendel Frere-Smith (born 1925) and Christopher Newman Frere-Smith (28 March 1928-October 2000). The Southwold Art Circle has the 'Sylvia Frere-Smith Award' for a watercolour which was founded by a donation of 100 made to the Art Circle by her son, Great Yarmouth sculptor Geoffrey Frere-Smith in memory of his mother, which is awarded to a member annually. She was probably not an artist painter.
