BROWN, Thomas Stirling
Thomas Stirling Brown was born at Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire on 28 July 1865, son of Thomas Brown (6 January 1837-2 February 1895) and his wife Annie née Ritchie (-22 February 1870). In 1901, a 35-year-old, ‘living on own means’ at Granham’s Road, Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, the home of his 34-year-old sister Margaret and her 37-year-old husband, William Arthur Douglas Rudge (1864-14 February 1942), a tutor & lecturer at Cambridge University and a former science master at Woodbridge School in Suffolk. Brown painted mainly animals and exhibited from Woodbridge at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1906 two oil paintings 'Tucking the Pilchards' and 'In a Western Harbour', he also exhibiting at the Royal Academy; the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists; Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Walker Art Gallery; Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Scottish Academy 1902-1915, from Shelford, Cambridgeshire in 1902, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1903, Drumchapel, Glasgow 1909 and Glasgow 1911. Thomas Stirling Brown died at 265 Greenhead Street, Glasgow on 4 September 1929.
