BROWN, Ethel Besfor
Ethel Besfor Brown was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1862, daughter of Robert Brown (1825-1882), a civil engineer, and his Irish born wife, Mary Ann née Geary, who married at Lambeth in 1847. In 1881, the family were living at 26 Denmark Road, Lowestoft from where Ethel exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1882, a watercolour 'Pakefield Beach' and in 1883 two watercolours, ‘Pakefield Beach, near Lowestoft’ and ‘The Warren House, near Lowestoft’. In 1891, unmarried Ethel had moved up the road to No. 52 with her widowed mother Mary Ann and Ethel's sibling sister Sarah [Clark] and were still there ten years later. By 1911, 48-year-old Ethel was living with her 82-year-old mother at 56 Denmark Road, Lowestoft and in 1921, with no occupation, at a boarding house at 18 Pembroke Road, Clifton, Bristol. Ethel Besfor Brown died at Berrow Nursing and Convalescent Home, 17 Carew Road, Eastbourne, Sussex on 21 August 1961, aged 99, she was unmarried.
