SHORT, Mary Elizabeth

1872 - 1955

Mary Elizabeth Short was born at 'Hillside', Church Street, Eye, Suffolk on 14 December 1872, daughter of artist William Short and his wife Mary Ann née Bolton (1831-December 1881) who married at Cratfield Church, Suffolk on 11 June 1868. In 1881, Mary Elizabeth was a 9-year-old, living at Church Street, Eye with her parents, 52-year-old William and 50-year-old Mary Ann. Mary was taught art by her father, and she was a member of Ipswich Art Club 1923-1935 from Hillside, Eye, but does not appear to have exhibited until 1945 when she had on show an oil, 'Edgar Granville, Esq., M.P.' In 1939, a County Alderman & Justice of the Peace for Suffolk, still living at Hillside, Church Street, Eye. Mary Elizabeth Short was Mayor of Eye and died at Hillside, Eye on 15 February 1955, aged 82, she was unmarried. The author of 'Historical Reminiscences of Eye' (Eye 1922) and her portrait is in the National Portrait Gallery.
