AITKEN, Andrew Balfour

1924 - 1989

Andrew Balfour Aitken was born in Uganda on 8 October 1924, son of Capt. William Stoddart Aitken (1888-), a veterinary officer, and his wife Maud Emily née Ogden, who married at Simla, India on 28 April 1920. Young Andrew was of Hammersmith Terrace, Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland in 1928 when his mother, Maude Emily Aitken and her three children, Jean 5, William John 4 and Andrew Balfour 2, sailed for Uganda, East Africa. Andrew studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1947-1951, under Leonard Rosoman (27 October 1913-21 February 2012), being awarded a travelling scholarship and took part in Group exhibitions in Edinburgh. A sub-editor on the 'Sunday Times' and studio artist with Everetts Advertising Ltd and art editor of 'Autocourse' 1968-1982 being head of art at Philip Morant School of Art at Colchester. Using the name 'Balfour', his early work was figurative later being influenced by an association with Amnesty International. He had a solo exhibition at Quay Theatre Gallery, Sudbury, Suffolk. Andrew Balfour Aitken died at Sudbury in January 1989.
