WHARTON, J
J. Wharton exhibited a watercolour, 'The Stepping Stone over the Brook' at the Society of British Artists in 1864 from Lidgate, Newmarket, Suffolk. Lidgate (or Lydgate) is a small Suffolk village 7 miles from Newmarket and 12 miles from Bury St Edmund's. In 1861 the population was only 443 persons and Kelly's Directories for 1864 or four years either side do not record a 'Wharton' resident.
