WINCH, John Miller

1857 - 1934

John Miller Winch was born at 41 Priory Street, St Botolph's, Colchester, Essex on 29 April 1857, son of John Winch (1808-11 August 1870), a cabinet maker, and his wife Maria née Edwards (14 May 1820-1864), Maria was born at Washbrook, Suffolk and married John at Colchester on 2 October 1849. Around 1880 young John, together with his two brothers George Henry Winch (25 December 1858-20 December 1889), and Frederick William Winch (1861-15 November 1904) as Wrinch Brothers, began as dealers of colorized albumen portraits, photographs of antiques and antiquities, carte-de-visite, real photo postcards, and rare postage stamps for collectors. In 1891, young John was a photographer, living at 208 Magdalen Street, Colchester and ten years later at the same address, a 'foreign stamp dealer & artist' but by 1911 had moved to 19 Wellesley Road, Colchester. A painter in oil of landscapes, figures and animals and a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1891-1930, exhibiting some thirty works 1891-1914 including in 1891 from St Botolph's House, Colchester, an oil 'Una Fiasca de Vino', in 1894 'The Hermit', in 1900 'Sleeping Michael, a Puppy' and 'Cat's Head', in 1914 he exhibited 'Old Roofs, Colchester'. He later moved to Woodland View, 101 Straight Road, Lexden, Colchester and married at Colchester on 10 December 1921, Mary Jane Barton (31 December 1875-2 May 1966), only daughter of Richard Barton of West Malling, Kent. John Miller Winch was of Woodland View, 101 Straight Road, Lexden, Colchester when he died at Crouch Street, Colchester on 15 October 1934, being survived by his widow.
