TIMBERS, Herbert Matthew
Herbert Matthew Timbers was born at Alexandra Cottages, 33 Mill Street, Kingston-upon-Thames on 5 May 1866, son of Matthew Timbers (1833-1903), a gardener, and his wife Emma Bussey née Dobson (1836-1907), a widow, who married at Norwich in 1866. In 1881, Herbert was a companion/servant to 86-year-old widow Eliza Sydney at The Laurels, Bulmer, Essex. He married at St George's Church, Brentford, Middlesex on 31 July 1890, Sarah Ann Hood and in 1901, Herbert and his wife left Kingston for St Edmund's House, Castle Street, Woodbridge, Suffolk where Herbert was a school board schoolmaster. In 1911, a 43-year-old elementary schoolmaster, living at 164 St Edmunds House, Woodbridge with his 44-year-old wife and five of his six surviving children, Elsie Florence 18, Philip James 13 and Violet Eleanor 11, born at Kingston, and Arthur Robert 5 and Margaret Edith 4, born at Woodbridge. His wife died at Woodbridge in 1921 and Herbert married secondly at Woodbridge in 1923, Ann H. Martin (1 April 1872-1940). A landscape painter in oil and watercolour and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1927-1930 and exhibited from St Edmund's House, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1927, six watercolours 'Fowan Head', 'Beech and Bracken', 'Woodbridge', 'Newquay Bay' and 'Ramsholt' exhibiting sixteen works in all, mostly local scenes. Herbert Matthew Timbers died at Hillside, Castle Street, Woodbridge on 4 April 1932, aged 64.
