SLATER, Martin Johns
Martin Johns Slater was born at Hadleigh, Suffolk on 28 April 1892, son of William Martin Slater (1859-21 February 1918), a pharmaceutical chemist at 41 High Street, Hadleigh, and his wife Ellen née Johns (1858-1951), who married at Ipswich in 1891. Before the First World War, Martin was articled to his architect uncle, Edwin Thomas Johns in the practice of Eade & Johns at Ipswich. In 1921, on his marriage to Eileen Marjorie Rands (24 September 1895-1946), he became a partner in his uncle's practice at 8 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich when the partnership became Johns & Slater until his uncle retired in 1933. A watercolour painter and a member of Ipswich Fine Art Club from 1921 and exhibited from 8 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich in 1927, four works 'Ufford', 'Claydon', 'Firle, Sussex' and 'Woodbridge' his other works 1924-1945 included 'Southwold Harbour' (1933) and from Firbank, Dalton Road, Ipswich 'Fishing Boats' (1945). In 1939, an architect & surveyor, living at 25 Dalton Road, Ipswich with his wife Eileen. Martin Johns Slater died at Firbank, 25 Dalton Road, Ipswich on 8 January 1990. Birkin Haward was later a partner in his architectural practice.
