DUROSE, Anthea
Anthea M. Durose was born at Birmingham in 1933, daughter of Harry Vernon Durose (1 January 1901-1990), a cost accountant, and his wife Millicent F. née [?] (3 November 1909-21 March 1978), who in 1939, were living at 'Green Lanes', Henley-in-Arden, Stratford-upon-Avon. Anthea trained at the Birmingham School of Art during the 1950s studying under Bernard Fleetwood-Walker, R.A. (1893-1965), a specialist in portraiture. Her training included graphical techniques and, during her student days, received commissions from Arthur James of Evesham for book illustrations. After nine years of teaching art in South Africa, she returned to England, settling in East Anglia. In 1967 she joined the art group of the Dutch artist Cor Visser at Ipswich and for some years taught art for the East Suffolk County Council Adult Centre and ran her own art classes in Ipswich and Colchester. Elected an associate member of Ipswich Art Club in 1967, and in 1973 exhibited from Dolf Cottage, Plains Farm, Boxted, Colchester, four paintings, two oils 'Cornfields by the Orwell' and 'Rosie', a watercolour 'Peonies and Objects on a Studio Table' and a crayon 'Still Life from Don Quixote' and was a regular exhibitor, showing the oil 'Rosie' at their centenary exhibition in 1974 and in 1977 exhibited 'Rhododendrons' and 'Readings'. She also exhibited at the Minories, Colchester and with Dedham Art Society where in 1976, she had a successful solo exhibition. In 1987, Anthea was invited to exhibit a collection of her portraits at the Ipswich Borough Council's Museums and Galleries as part of the Museum's exhibition 'The Triumphant Image'. Durose specialised in portraiture but also in genre, landscape, flower, and still-life painting working in a variety of media including oil, watercolour, and pastel. Her work can be found in the collection of the Ipswich Borough Council's Museums and Galleries, Thetford Museum and in many private collections throughout England, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, South Africa, and Canada. She lived at Grove House, 115 Paper Mill Lane, Bramford, near Ipswich. Anthea Durose died at her home on 12 April 2024.
