RALPH, George Keith
George Keith Ralph was born in September 1752, noted when he registered as a student at the Royal Academy Schools in 1775 at the age of ‘23 last Sept’. He exhibited some thirty-five works at the Royal Academy from 1778, including one of Mr King, master of the ceremonies at Bath (1790) and in 1794 he described himself as 'portrait painter to the Duke of Clarence'. He also exhibited at the Society of Artists of Great Britain and the British Institution. Although based in London, Ralph appears to have obtained considerable employment in the provinces, notably in the eastern counties. Several of his portraits were engraved including one of John Spink, alderman and banker of Bury St Edmund’s in 1782 with the original oil painting now in the town's Guildhall. His last exhibit ‘Portrait of a Lady Playing on the Lyre’ was in 1811 when living at 14 Tavistock Row, Covent Garden, London, but is not heard of after that.
