BATCHELDER, Stephen John 1870-1949
Stephen John Batchelder was born at Caistor Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 31 May 1870, son of Stephen John Batchelder (1849-1932) and his wife Anne née Lubbock (bapt 20 December 1846-8 September 1936) who married at St Augustine's Church, Norwich on 6 April 1868. Young Stephen inherited some of his father's artistic qualities, as noted from some of his illuminated testimonials and certificates. He taught biology and botany, firstly at Norwich and he married at St Nicholas with St Peter, Great Yarmouth on 30 December 1895 Ann Otto née Curtis (14 August 1871-21 February 1959, daughter of William Otto Curtis, and lived at Ipswich when Stephen was science master at Ipswich School. In 1911 they were living at 93 Belle Vue Road Ipswich with their two daughters Hetty May (8 November 1898-1958) who was born at Great Yamouth and Annie Viola (3 December 1901-1951), who was born at Ipswich. He helped found the Ipswich Field Club in 1906 and was leader of many of the field meetings and from 1924 also held field meetings of the Ipswich Naturalists. A Fellow of the Linnaean Society he died at Ipswich on 9 November 1949 and his wife died at Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1959.
