LOWTHER, Hon Alice
As Charlotte Alice Parke, she was born at Ampthill Park House, Bedfordshire on 19 November 1828, third daughter of James Parke, 1st Baron Wensleydale (22 March 1782- 25 February 1868) and his wife Cecilia Arabella Frances Barlow (1793-10 May 1879), daughter of Samuel Francis Barlow, James and Cecilia married on 8 April 1817. Alice as she was known married on 17 December 1853, the diplomat and MP, William Lowther (14 December 1821-23 January 1912), son of Col. the Hon Henry Cecil Lowther (27 July 1790-6 December 1867) and Lady Eleanor Lowther née Sherrard (1799-6 December 1867). Following the death without issue of John George Sheppard, the last of the Sheppard family to own High House, the Campsea Ashe estate in Suffolk was offered at an auction in London in July 1883 and it was sold to the Hon. William Lowther of Lowther Lodge, Hyde Park, a brother of the third Earl of Lonsdale, for £105,000 and the Lowther family continued to live at High House until its demolition in 1953. The Hon. C Alice Lowther died at High House on 5 January 1908 and William followed in 1912. As the Hon. Mrs William Lowther she painted watercolours of two of their daughters Mildred Alice Lowther (6 November 1859-8 September 1876), who died at Ampthill Park, as a result of an accident, and Mabel Cecily (September 1862-1949), and their eldest son was James William 1st Viscount Ullswater Lowther
