CONTEMPORARY GLASS SOCIETY

1997 - ?

The Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) rose from the ashes of British Artists in Glass, which was an informal association of individual glass artists founded in 1976 by a group of artists including the glass sculptor David Reekie (1947-) which closed in 1992. The Contemporary Glass Society was founded in 1997 by Peter Layton (1937-), of the London Glassblowing workshop, together with Colin Reid (1953-) and Tessa Clegg (1946-) with Peter Layton as its first chairman. CGS is an association of artists working in the medium of glass in the United Kingdom and internationally and is the UK’s foremost organisation supporting both established glass artists and up-and-coming makers. The organisation funded through member subscriptions and charitable contributions and publishes the Glass Network digital magazine, the New Graduate Review magazine and awards an annual graduate review prize. In 2005 CGS became a non-profit making limited company. Suffolk artist members of the Contemporary Glass Society include Claire Fernig; Gay Hutchings and Surinder Warboys.
